Other
items seen in traditional Japanese interiors include:
Jodan
A raised area or
platform within a room, on which tokonoma or shoin are usually
located. This would designate the most important interior
space.
Shoji
A sliding outer
partition of "doors" made of a latticework wood frame using
wood joinery, and covered with translucent white paper
Tatami
These are
rectangular, rush covered floor mats approximately 6' x 3' in
size and about 2" thick. The edges on the long sides are
bound by cloth strips. In the photo below, the seating
cushions at the table are on tatami mats.
Fusuma,
or
sliding interior partitions made of latticework word frame
covered with heavy opaque paper, are also shown in the photo
above.
Shitaji-mado (Bamboo Window
Lattices)
These types of lattices are
often seen in Japanese garden structures.
